In the book Nim's Island, Nim is doing an experiment to see if coconuts float. We decided to do our own experiment. You might like investigate floating and sinking at home. Fill a sink or container with water and find a variety of different shaped/weight/size items. Make a prediction and see if you were right. If you want some more information, click on the image below to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy explain about buoyancy.

We started off our art this term by looking at the art of James Rizzi. Below are the links we looked at in class as part of our inspiration. As you are watching, think about what might have inspired James Rizzi to create such interesting pieces? What do you think about this style of art? Would you like to live in the Happy Rizzi House? Here is your challenge - what does anthropomorphic mean? (See the wikipedia link)
We have started creating our own art based on the New York skyscrapers he depicts in many of his pieces. Keep an eye out for the finished pieces - we are very proud of them. At the end of Term 1 we completed our robots. We sketched the outlines and details using pencil then add colour with oil pastels. The background was dyed. Some of them look friendly, and others are rather scary. Check them out in Tōtara 25. Unfortunately the bad weather meant we had to revise the hunt, but we still had fun working with our buddies in Waimakariri 20.
Tōtara 25 enjoyed a trip to the Christchurch Art Gallery to find out about 3D sculptures. We discussed the stories behind the sculptures and how the artists used different materials, colours and space to create them. There were some great observations and questions from the tamariki and many were hoping to visit the Gallery during the school holidays to explore further. We are so lucky to have such an amazing place in our city. Thank you to the staff at the gallery and the parents who were able to come along and support us. We are working on our Pepeha and learning about place names in Aotearoa. How many places have you been to? If you want to learn more, click on this link.
