On Thursday we met to solve a maths problem. Miss Scadden told us a story about an old sheep dog lazing around in a paddock near the house. The sheep dog counted the number of animals in the paddock. There were 11 animals. The animals were pigs and ducks. Her eyes moved to the legs and she counted them and there were 28 legs. How many ducks were there?

How would you open a coconut? Well..... the children in Tōtara thought dropping it off the balcony would do the trick - so that is what we did (after making sure no one was underneath of course. First of all we drilled a hole in Tōtara 27's coconut, and the one that we had been using for an experiment on whether coconuts float in Totara 25. The liquid that came out of Room 27's looked more appetising - and smelt better too. We decided that two weeks floating in water is not good for coconuts. Next the classes went downstairs to eagerly await the dropping of the coconut. The fresh coconut broke beautifully in half, but the floated coconut only cracked and had to be dropped again. Once they were open we compared them. The inside of the fresh coconut was a beautiful white colour, the other one was a slimy creamy colour. It was a bit tricky cutting out the coconut and we think there are easier ways than using a spoon or knife. We all got a chance to taste the fresh coconut - while the nasty slimy one was quickly disposed of. Once everyone who wanted a taste had done so, we did a quick survey. We found out that 30 people liked the coconut, and 15 people didn't. Statements we came up with were; More people like coconut than don't like it. Twice as many people liked the coconut. We wondered if you were stuck on a deserted island and all you had to eat was coconut - but you didn't like coconut; would you eat it? Here is an interesting clip about how to open a coconut if you don't have any tools that i found on YouTube. So, if you don't have a handy balcony or Ms Scadden's power drill - you will know what to do. |
